Secondary Care Treatment in Thailand

Secondary care is the step-down phase of treatment that follows detox and primary care — less intensive, but still structured and supervised. At Holina Rehab, secondary care helps clients consolidate the coping skills, routines and stability built in primary treatment, before stepping down further into aftercare and independent life. This reduces the relapse risk that comes with moving too quickly from residential care back into everyday life.

Understanding the Continuum of Care

What Is Secondary Care in Addiction Treatment?

Secondary care is a defined level of care — not a diagnosis or a condition — that sits between primary residential treatment and aftercare. It is designed for clients who have completed primary care and no longer need the most intensive, tightly structured phase of treatment, but who still benefit from a supportive, substance-free environment before returning fully to independent life.

In the wider addiction treatment field this stage is also known as “step-down care” or a “transitional programme.” The goal is the same everywhere it is practised: bridge the gap between highly structured rehab and full independence, so progress made in primary treatment has room to become habit rather than being tested too soon.

At Holina Rehab, secondary care combines individual therapy, group work, life-skills coaching and peer support with a more autonomous daily schedule, so clients can practise the tools of recovery in conditions that increasingly resemble real life — while our clinical team remains close by.

Continuum-of-care fact

Relapse affects an estimated 40–60% of people recovering from a substance use disorder — a rate NIDA compares to relapse in other chronic conditions such as hypertension and asthma. SAMHSA’s continuum-of-care model identifies step-down levels of support — like Holina’s secondary care — as central to reducing that risk, by letting clients practise recovery skills in a less intensive setting before full reintegration.

The Difference, Explained

How Does Secondary Care Differ From Primary Care?

Primary and secondary care share the same clinical team and the same goal — sustainable recovery. What changes between them is intensity, structure, and how much independence a client is ready to manage.

Level of Supervision

Primary care provides round-the-clock clinical oversight following detox. Secondary care is still supervised, but with more autonomy day to day.

Daily Structure

Primary care runs on a tightly scheduled therapeutic day. Secondary care keeps structure but builds in unscheduled time to practise independence.

Therapy Focus

Primary care stabilises and addresses the initial trauma driving addiction. Secondary care deepens that work and shifts toward life-skills and reintegration.

Living Arrangement

Primary care residents stay within the core treatment setting. Secondary care allows a more independent living rhythm, still on a supportive, substance-free site.

Peer Community

Primary care groups are newer to treatment. Secondary care peer groups are further along in recovery, reinforcing accountability and shared experience.

Purpose

Primary care builds the foundation of sobriety. Secondary care consolidates it, preparing clients for aftercare and life beyond residential treatment.

Secondary care works best when the environment supports gradually increasing autonomy. Koh Phangan’s calm, tropical setting — away from the routines and triggers of home — gives clients room to test new coping skills at a manageable pace.

Clients retain access to the pool, gym, restaurant, and holistic therapies used throughout their programme, alongside the more independent rhythm secondary care introduces.

“Ian was absolutely game changing in helping our family with an intervention, without which we were in an endless spiral of pain and suffering. Since Ian’s intervention we have managed to get the family member into a stable situation.”

Common Questions

Secondary Care Treatment: Frequently Asked Questions

What is secondary care in addiction treatment?

Secondary care is the level of care that follows detox and primary treatment. It is less intensive than primary care but still structured and supervised, helping clients consolidate coping skills and routines before stepping down into aftercare and independent living. Learn more about the stage before it, Addiction Primary Care.

Do I need to complete primary care before starting secondary care?

Yes. Secondary care is a step-down phase, so it follows an assessment showing a client has stabilised through detox and completed the intensive work of primary care. Readiness is confirmed by the clinical team, not by a fixed number of days.

How long does secondary care last at Holina Rehab?

Length of stay in secondary care is individualised and set with your clinical team based on progress, any co-occurring conditions, and readiness for greater independence. It is planned as part of your overall programme, not a fixed add-on.

How is secondary care different from primary care?

Primary care provides round-the-clock structure and clinical supervision immediately after detox. Secondary care keeps therapy and support in place but introduces more independence — a more autonomous daily schedule and semi-independent living — so clients can practise recovery skills before full reintegration.

What happens after secondary care ends?

Clients move into Aftercare, where a personalised relapse-prevention and continuing-care plan carries the progress made in residential treatment into daily life, with ongoing support from Holina’s alumni community.

Is secondary care covered by insurance?

Holina Rehab is a private-pay facility and does not bill insurance directly. Residents can use our financing options across their full programme, including secondary care. Coverage depends on your provider and policy. See rehab insurance and financing, or contact our team to check your specific cover.
