Spiritual Healing
Spiritual healing is one part of treatment at Holina Rehab — offered alongside medical detox, evidence-based therapy and our Dual Treatment programme, never in place of them. It draws on the Buddhist practice of our co-founder Prah Olarn Pengsakul and the 12-Step spiritual principles of our co-founder Yossi Zubari, giving residents a daily practice of meditation, mindfulness and reflection that supports the clinical work of recovery rather than standing apart from it.

What Is Spiritual Healing at Holina Rehab?
Holina Rehab treats addiction as a physical, mental and spiritual condition, and the spiritual side of that work sits alongside — not in place of — medical detox, talking therapy and our Dual Treatment programme for co-occurring anxiety, depression and trauma.
The approach comes directly from Holina’s two founders. Prah Olarn Pengsakul, the monk who gifted the resort that became Holina and is widely known on Koh Phangan as its spiritual father, brings a Buddhist influence built on presence, compassion and daily practice. Yossi Zubari, a long-time member of 12-Step Fellowships, brings a more humanistic, practical understanding of spirituality shaped by his own recovery.
In practical terms, that means Holina merges ancient Buddhist philosophy with the modern spiritual tools of the 12-Step model — not as a separate retreat track, but as a daily thread running through a resident’s clinical treatment. For the founding story behind this, see our history; for how it fits the wider treatment philosophy, see our vision.
Spiritual healing at Holina is delivered by a team that also includes counsellors, coaches, mentors, therapists, psychotherapists and trainers — and, given the founders’ backgrounds, a monk. It is coordinated with each resident’s clinical plan, not run as a stand-alone wellness track.
What Spiritual Healing Practices Does Holina Offer?
Each practice below is woven into a resident’s residential stay alongside clinical treatment, not delivered as a separate programme.
Inner Walk Meditation
A walking-meditation practice personally introduced by Prah Olarn Pengsakul to build presence and mindfulness. Read the full clinical picture on our Inner Walk page.
Breathwork
Guided breathing practice used to help regulate the nervous system. See our dedicated Breathwork page for how it fits Dual Treatment.
Daily Yoga
Regular yoga practice forms part of the daily rhythm of a resident’s stay, supporting physical grounding alongside the spiritual and clinical work.
Mindfulness Meditation
Meditation practices rooted in Thai Buddhism and other Eastern traditions, used alongside CBT, DBT and talking therapy rather than instead of them.
12-Step Spiritual Principles
Yossi Zubari’s own lessons from long-term 12-Step membership — an attitude of gratitude, humility and service to others — applied as practical daily tools.
Friday Sunset Dinners
A weekly community ritual where residents reflect on the past week together and plan the week ahead — part of Holina’s communal rhythm, not a treatment modality in itself.
How Does Spiritual Practice Support Addiction Recovery?
At Holina Rehab, addiction is treated as a physical, mental and spiritual condition — and the spiritual work exists specifically to support the other two, not to stand apart from them.

Mindfulness as a Clinical Tool, Not Just a Retreat Activity
Holina’s own treatment philosophy describes mindfulness as an evidence-based meditation practice used to address anxiety, depression, complex PTSD and other emotional health conditions that commonly accompany addiction — which is why it is delivered inside the clinical programme rather than as a separate wellness offering. Our Inner Walk and Breathwork pages set out the clinical detail behind two of these practices.
The 12-Step principles Yossi Zubari brings to this work — gratitude, humility and service to others — are, in his words, a practical guide to living a meaningful life by applying spiritual tools in daily action, not an abstract belief system layered on top of treatment.

Coordinated With Your Clinical Plan, Not Separate From It
Because addiction is worked through alongside co-occurring trauma, anxiety and depression under Holina’s Dual Treatment programme, the spiritual practices on this page are scheduled by the same clinical team responsible for the rest of a resident’s plan. There is no fixed start date — treatment, including this component, begins as soon as a resident arrives.
The People Behind Holina’s Spiritual Healing

Spiritual Healing at Holina: Frequently Asked Questions
Is spiritual healing a replacement for clinical addiction treatment at Holina?
No. Spiritual healing is one component of treatment at Holina Rehab, delivered alongside medical detox, evidence-based therapies such as CBT and DBT, and our Dual Treatment programme for co-occurring anxiety, depression and trauma. It is coordinated by the same clinical team, never offered as a stand-alone substitute for clinical care.
What spiritual healing practices does Holina offer?
Inner Walk walking-meditation (introduced by Prah Olarn Pengsakul), daily yoga, breathwork, mindfulness meditation rooted in Thai Buddhism and other Eastern traditions, and the 12-Step spiritual principles of gratitude, humility and service to others that Yossi Zubari brings from his own recovery. Weekly Friday sunset dinners are also part of Holina’s community rhythm.
Is Holina’s spiritual approach tied to one religion?
No. Holina blends Buddhist philosophy with the humanistic spirituality of the 12-Step model, but residents are not required to hold any particular belief. Holina maintains an open door to people of all religions, atheists, cultures, and backgrounds.
Who leads the spiritual healing component at Holina?
It is led by Holina’s two founders — Prah Olarn Pengsakul, a Buddhist monk known locally as Koh Phangan’s spiritual father, and Yossi Zubari, a long-time 12-Step Fellowship member — working alongside therapists such as Marc Rower and William Morgan, who integrate these practices directly into each resident’s clinical plan.
When does the spiritual healing component of treatment begin?
Holina Rehab does not have a fixed start date. Treatment begins as soon as a resident arrives, and spiritual practices such as the Inner Walk, breathwork and mindfulness meditation are built into the daily and weekly rhythm of the residential programme from day one.
