Behavioural Health Wellness Retreats vs. Addiction Treatment: The Difference

Behavioural Health Wellness Retreats vs. Addiction Treatment: The Difference

Search for a “behavioural health wellness retreat” and you will find hundreds of beautiful options promising rest, mindfulness and time in nature. For many people navigating stress or burnout, a retreat can be a genuinely restorative reset. But there is an important distinction that often gets blurred: a wellness retreat is not clinical treatment. If your behavioural health struggles come alongside alcohol or drug use, a retreat on its own is unlikely to be enough, and it may delay the care you actually need.

Holina Rehab is a licensed addiction treatment centre on Koh Phangan, Thailand, not a wellness retreat. This article explains the difference between the two, why so many people with behavioural health difficulties also live with a substance use disorder, and why co-occurring conditions call for integrated clinical treatment rather than a short escape.

What a Wellness Retreat Offers, and Where It Stops

A typical mental wellness retreat centres on relaxation and self-care: meditation, yoga, breathwork, healthy food and a calming setting away from daily pressures. These are worthwhile practices, and there is good evidence that time spent in natural environments can lower stress and support mood. For someone who is fundamentally well but overloaded, a few days of structured rest can help.

Where a retreat stops is at the threshold of a clinical condition. Retreats are generally not staffed to provide medical detox, are not equipped to manage withdrawal, and do not deliver structured, ongoing therapy for a diagnosed behavioural health or substance use disorder. Presenting addiction as something a relaxing week can resolve risks setting people up to relapse when they return home to the same triggers, without the tools or aftercare to cope.

When It Is More Than Stress: Co-Occurring Conditions

Behavioural health difficulties and substance use are closely linked, and far more often than most people realise. According to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Behavioural Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an estimated 21.2 million adults had both a mental illness and a substance use disorder in the past year, based on the 2024 National Survey on Drug Use and Health. Among adults with any mental illness, roughly one in three also had a substance use disorder.

These are known as co-occurring disorders. Someone might begin using alcohol to quiet anxiety, or drugs to numb the effects of trauma or depression, and over time the two conditions feed one another. The same SAMHSA data found that a large share of people with co-occurring conditions receive no treatment at all for either problem, which is one reason a wellness retreat can feel appealing: it looks accessible and low-pressure. But it does not address the underlying disorder.

Why Addiction Needs Integrated Clinical Treatment

When a behavioural health condition and a substance use disorder occur together, treating only one, or treating them in separate places, tends to leave people caught between systems. SAMHSA identifies integrated treatment, where both conditions are addressed at the same time by the same clinical team, as the evidence-based approach for co-occurring disorders. Parallel or fragmented care is associated with poorer engagement and worse outcomes.

That is the core reason Holina is a treatment centre rather than a retreat. Our Dual Treatment programme is built to address addiction and the psychological difficulties that sit beneath it together, within one clinical framework, supported by a multidisciplinary team. It combines structured therapy with holistic practices, but the therapy is the treatment; the setting supports it rather than replacing it.

How Holina Differs From a Retreat

Holina is situated in a peaceful, nature-based setting on Koh Phangan, and the environment genuinely supports recovery, which is part of why we are here. But what defines Holina is the clinical programme, not the scenery. Our team of therapists, counsellors and support staff provides individualised treatment plans, one-to-one and group therapy, evidence-based approaches such as cognitive behavioural therapy, and structured aftercare so that the work continues after clients return home.

If you are weighing up a wellness retreat because you are struggling with your behavioural health, it is worth asking an honest question first: is this stress and burnout, or is substance use part of the picture? If it is the latter, a retreat is not the right tool. Structured, integrated addiction treatment is.

“People sometimes arrive expecting a retreat and are surprised to find real clinical work. That work is the point. When addiction and a behavioural health condition travel together, rest alone will not shift them; treating both, at the same time, is what gives people a durable recovery.”

Dr. Natalie Lindemann, Clinical Director, Holina Rehab

If you’re also looking for help with addiction then please don’t wait any longer to contact them, it will save your life like it has mine.”
