Depression Treatment for Addiction Recovery in Thailand
At Holina Rehab, depression is treated as part of addiction recovery, not as a stand-alone diagnosis. Substance use and depression frequently reinforce each other — through self-medication or the neurochemical changes addiction causes in the brain. Our licensed Dual Treatment programme in Koh Phangan addresses both together, under full-time clinical supervision.

How Common Is Depression Among People in Addiction Recovery?
Depression is a mood disorder that causes persistent sadness, loss of interest in activities once enjoyed, and often a heavy sense of fatigue. It affects an estimated 5.7% of adults globally in any given year, and an estimated one in five people will experience a depressive episode at some point in their life (Hasin et al., 2018, JAMA Psychiatry). Left untreated, it tends to worsen over time.
Among people in addiction treatment, depression is far more common than in the general population. It can arrive first — and be numbed through alcohol or drugs — or it can develop as a direct result of substance use disrupting the brain’s chemistry. Either way, treating the addiction without addressing the depression underneath it, or treating depression without addressing the addiction feeding it, rarely leads to lasting recovery.
That is why Holina Rehab never treats depression as an isolated psychiatric condition. It is addressed as one part of a person’s overall recovery, through psychological support, counselling and therapy delivered inside our residential Dual Treatment programme.
An estimated 21.5 million U.S. adults (8.4%) had a co-occurring mental illness and substance use disorder in the past year (SAMHSA, 2022 National Survey on Drug Use and Health), and depression is among the conditions most frequently reported alongside substance use. In clinical treatment settings, depression and substance use disorder frequently co-occur, with the relationship varying by population studied (NIDA, Common Comorbidities with Substance Use Disorders Research Report). Holina’s Dual Treatment programme addresses depression and addiction together, not as separate services.
What Are the Signs of Depression During Addiction Recovery?
Depression symptoms usually occur most of the day, nearly every day, over an extended period. Recognising them early — in yourself or someone you love — helps our clinical team build the right treatment plan from day one.
Persistent Sadness or Emptiness
A low mood that does not lift, often alongside feelings of hopelessness about the future.
Loss of Interest or Pleasure
Withdrawing from activities, relationships, or routines that once felt meaningful.
Appetite & Weight Changes
Noticeable weight loss or gain unrelated to intentional dieting.
Sleep Disturbances
Trouble falling or staying asleep, or sleeping far more than usual.
Fatigue & Loss of Energy
A heavy tiredness that makes ordinary daily tasks feel overwhelming.
Restlessness or Slowing
Visible agitation and pacing, or the opposite — noticeably slowed movement and speech.
Guilt or Worthlessness
A disproportionate sense of guilt, shame, or feeling like a burden to others.
Difficulty Concentrating
Trouble thinking clearly, concentrating, or making even small decisions.
Thoughts of Death
Recurring thoughts of death or suicide require immediate professional support — not a wait-and-see approach.
How Is Depression Treated at Holina Rehab?

Doctor-supervised care during early withdrawal, when depressive symptoms are often most acute.

Depression Treatment: Frequently Asked Questions
Is depression treated on its own at Holina, or only alongside addiction?
Only alongside addiction. Holina Rehab is a licensed addiction treatment centre, not a psychiatric facility, so we do not enrol clients for depression as a stand-alone condition. Depression is addressed within our residential Dual Treatment programme, together with the substance use it is connected to.
What is the connection between depression and addiction?
The two commonly reinforce each other in two directions. Some people use alcohol or drugs to self-medicate an existing low mood, temporarily numbing symptoms that return, often worse, once the substance wears off. In others, sustained substance use itself disrupts brain chemistry and triggers or deepens depressive symptoms. Either pattern is why we treat both together rather than in isolation.
Does Holina prescribe antidepressant medication?
Depression at Holina is addressed primarily through individual counselling, evidence-based therapies (CBT and DBT), structured programming, and holistic care. Where medication is clinically relevant, our on-site physician can advise on this as part of your overall treatment plan — it is one tool within Dual Treatment, not the primary approach.
How long does treatment for depression and addiction take?
Most residents follow a 30, 60, or 90-day residential programme. Shorter stays stabilise the immediate crisis, while longer stays allow deeper work on the psychological drivers connecting depression and substance use. The right length is set during your initial assessment.
Can my family be involved in treatment?
Yes. Family involvement supports lasting recovery, and we help loved ones understand how depression and addiction interact and rebuild trust. See our family addiction support for how families can take part.
Does insurance cover treatment for depression and addiction?
Holina Rehab is a private-pay facility and does not bill insurance directly. Residents can use our financing options to fund treatment. Coverage depends on your provider and policy. See rehab insurance and financing for options, or how much rehab costs in Thailand, and contact our team to check your specific cover.
